If you put the server that you store your Revit files into the cloud with such small bandwidth, you are going to have very long load times as well as slow times saving back to central. I would agree with AutoDesk's assessment on requiring a local server for Revit models, even if you aren't using Revit Server itself. I can't say for sure though because we've never actually tested Revit Server. When we looked at Revit Server, I believe that it had to re-replicate the entire file when a change was made so it seems like that could consume a lot of bandwidth. Your bandwidth does seem very small for loading 150MB+ Revit files. The RDP to workstations in the main office solved the Revit issue by eliminating the need to load the Revit model over the slow 2.88Mbps link since only the RDP traffic is passing over the link, not the actual Revit file. By eliminating their local file server and having them use the file server in the main office, files would open slower but ultimately performance was better. We used to replicate files between servers in each office (using Global WAFS, not Revit Server), but it kept saturating our small link. This private link is used for all traffic from the remote office, including their connection to the Internet (via our 10Mbps main office connection), hosted e-mail, etc. There is a private 2.88Mbps (dual T1) link connecting our remote office to our main office. (I left out a bunch of technical specs, but just let me know if you need more info)įor bandwidth, our main office is 10Mbps to the Internet. This whole issue is just boggling my mind. Or, can Revit Server 2012 be a VM server located with the rest of the "clouded" servers?

So, who is using Revit between offices while at the same time using cloud services for your network needs including email and data storage? Did you have to compromise and keep a server "out of the cloud" to install Revit Server 2012 on. We wanted to use "the cloud" instead, since that is where we are trying to move our entire network system to (including email).Īfter having a teleconference with Autodesk and a cloud service provider, it seems that Revit is not suited for a cloud environment.

What we are trying to do is to keep from buying\upgrading two servers and Windows 2003 software systems to server as the Revit server. However, the roles could be reversed on future projects where Large office would be the project owners, so we would need to have a Revit Server 2012 machine set up in that office as well.
So, Small office is the project owner and this is where we would place the Revit Server 2012 machine. Small office has Revit projects and occasionally we want Large office to help them meet deadlines. We have two offices I will call Large and Small. We are looking at moving our network system to a cloud service provider (in lieu of upgrading our old hardware and software) but we are stuck on the issue of working with Revit. I know about Autodesk Revit Server 2012\13, but that requires a physical server at one of the project location. I would like to know how you are working between offices when using Revit.
